Selling Authoritarianism
Authoritarianism is a complex phenomenon. As is the case for any other modality of government, it is marked not only by its political praxes, but by its social, economic, and ideological contents as well. If authoritarianism’s legal foundations allow comparatively easy recourse to coercion and repression, its stability nevertheless requires degrees of popular and elite consent.
This project aims to make sense of authoritarian rule in the contemporary Middle East and North Africa. Surveying authoritarianism’s domestic and international properties, we work to explain the system’s resilience and idiosyncrasies.
