Philip Luke Johnson is a doctoral candidate in political science at the Graduate Center, City University of New York.
He teaches courses on U.S. and Latin American politics, and political violence. He also serves as a Writing Fellow at the City University of New York.
Johnson’s research examines organized crime and security in Mexico, with a particular focus on the interrelations of violence and the media. Since 2017, he has made regular research trips to Mexico. As part of this field research, he created a dataset of “narco-messages” covering the period from 2004 to 2013. Prior to his academic career, Johnson was a primary school teacher in Guadalajara, Mexico. He has a B.A. from the University of Sydney.
