Sümbül Kaya holds a PhD in Political Science (University Panthéon-Sorbonne-Paris I, CESSP). In November 2013, she defended a thesis entitled “The Military Production of the Citizen. Political Sociology of Conscription in Turkey” under the supervision of Gilles Dorronsoro. In 2015, her PhD thesis was awarded with the Mattei Dogan Foundation Prize by the French Association of Political Science (AFSP), category “States and nations in a multipolar world”. Her research lies at the intersection between sociology and political science.
In the framework of political sociology, Sümbül focusses on the political socialization and civic and national identifications and belonging, in Turkey and France. She is also interested in the sociology of armed conflict and violence in Turkey. She is currently developing a new research on law and politics in Turkey from trials observation.
She is currently Fellow and Head of Contemporary Studies at the French Institute of Anatolian Studies (IFEA) in Istanbul. Previously, she was postdoctoral fellow and member of several ANR research programs at EHESS (“Trans-Acting Matters: Areas and Eras of a (Post-)Ottoman Globalization”, directed by Marc Aymes, and “Ordering and Transacting: Modalities of Government and Administration in Turkey and the Ottoman Empire, from the 19th Century to the Present”, directed by Elise Massicard) and CERAPS (“Experiences of Discrimination, Political Participation and Representation”, directed by Julien Talpin).
