His research focuses on the governance of risks, disasters, and mass fatalities in Cameroon. He is also the co-founder of the Africas Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Discussant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Eric Essono Tsimi is a writer, an anthropologist and Assistant Professor (Baruch College, CUNY). He published several books, including: Les inadmirables. Essai sur l\u2019art (forc\u00e9ment) peu subtil de la b\u00eatise, Paris, Hermann, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/noria-research.com\/africas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/noria-research.com\/africas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1-1.png 1080w, https:\/\/noria-research.com\/africas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1-1-1000x333.png 1000w, https:\/\/noria-research.com\/africas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1-1-500x167.png 500w, https:\/\/noria-research.com\/africas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1-1-768x256.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This presentation examines how the 1998 disaster in Nsam, Yaound\u00e9 (Cameroon\u2019s political capital), and the 2016 Es\u00e9ka disaster in the Nyong and Kell\u00e9 department reveal tensions surrounding the public utility of infrastructure in Cameroon. It explores the \u201cmoral economies\u201d of local communities that, when faced with infrastructure projects such as railways or factories, only recognise them as truly public if they provide direct benefits\u2014an expectation that often places them at odds with the notion of public interest as defined by the state.<br>In this context, disasters transcend their status as mere events and become moments and spaces for renegotiating relationships to infrastructure and power.
